President's Message

Welcome back to another school year!

posted Sep 27, 2011 12:42 PM by Robert Plotkin

This is an important transition year for our community as we welcome many new faces to our district.

We look forward to working with our new Superintendent, Lisa Brady, as she brings a wealth of
experience and knowledge to our district. We welcome our wonderful new Springhurst Principal, Julia
DiSalvo Drake and we’re excited to learn and collaborate with our new High School Principal, John
Falino.

For the PTSA, this will be a year of community building, communication and collaboration with parent
groups across our district. We have renewed focus on streamlining our functions and working together
to give our community the best possible school-year experience.

We are excited to build on the enrichment programs already in place, find new ways to fulfill the needs
of the whole child and continue to create a sense of community within our district. We will work closely
with the Board of Education on communication to the public and we’ll keep you abreast of what’s
happening in education statewide.

We urge all of you to reach out and communicate with us directly. Let us know what the PTSA can do
for you. Volunteer your time. Get to know your fellow parents. Enrich your children’s lives.

We look forward to meeting each and every one of you and to working with you to reach and exceed
our goals of creating the best educational environment for the children of Dobbs Ferry.

Have a wonderful year!

What we've done 2009-2010

posted Jul 5, 2010 6:25 AM by President DFPTSA

The Dobbs Ferry PTSA has continued in its mission of working together with parents, teachers, and the community to be advocates for creating the best educational environment for our children. Our membership continues to increase and our volunteers worked hard all year to provide support for our schools. From greeting new parents in the district at a breakfast in September to providing a floral arrangement at graduation and stepping up ceremonies in June, the PTSA is involved in all our schools all year long.

The PTSA utilized emails of our members to send out our bi-weekly newsletter, the Current Bulletin. Large copies of the Bulletin were posted at the entrance of our elementary and middle schools for extra communication.

At Springhurst, all our students enjoyed a month long “Readers are Leaders” program that encouraged the entire school to share their current reading material. Our Kindergarten classes participated in a Sign Language program. First graders completed another mosaic mural to add to the beauty of the outdoor classroom. Second grade science was enriched with a Biome Sweet Home program. Our third graders enjoyed a year with the Chinese Cultural Center. The PTSA provided transportation for our 4th graders to the Clearwater ship, and they also had a nature awareness hike with Ranger Rick. On Earth Day, the band Solar Punch entertained all students.

The students at our Middle School also enjoyed many enrichment programs thanks to PTSA funding. The 6th grade met a medieval peasant via 21st century technology. Some birds of prey visited our turf field to entertain and teach the 7th grade who later attended a math show called “Eureka.”  Our 8th grade studied Shakespeare then enjoyed a day long residency with a theater group. Drama club students were transported to Broadway to enjoy West Side Story. Many students were honored as ‘student of the month’ throughout the year and given a gift card from the PTSA.

PTSA is also very active in our High School. The students got to play The Admission Game to learn how to be more attractive to college admission offices. Many parents attended an evening session of the same program. The PTSA paid for our Model UN club was able to participate in extra competitions. Transportation was provided to the senior prom by the PTSA, saving additional costs for our students. Healthy snacks were provided during mid term exams.

In partnership with the school district and the Dobbs Ferry Schools Foundation, the PTSA has funded a community wide reading program for the 2010-11 school year. We hope everyone is reading “Three Cups of Tea.”

Funding for all these programs comes through our events—Pumpkin Fair, gifts and wrapping paper sales, book fairs, school photos, and others. Thanks to all community members who supported the PTSA—it allows us to support all our students.

Thank you

As another successful school year draws to a close, and as our two year term as PTSA Co-Presidents comes to an end, we want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support of our organization.
Without our wonderful volunteers and supporters, we could not have been successful.
We would like to sincerely thank each and every one of our PTSA Class Coordinators for all their hard work through the year. Whether it was in the classroom supporting your teacher or sending out an email message from us, we thank you for your efforts.
We would like to thank our event chairs who make each season fun and exciting. Where would the Dobbs Ferry community be without school supplies and the Pumpkin Fair, Wrapping Paper and Book Fairs? Our gardens are beautiful thanks to the Plant Sale, and we always enjoy a fun Spring Community event.
A big word of thanks to our Class Coordinator Chair and to all of our Executive Board Committee Chairs and Support Committees.
Thank you also to our Executive Committee and also to our friends, the Dobbs Ferry Schools Foundation, who continue to enrich our students' lives. We thank them for the partnership and wish them continued success.
In these difficult economic times, the PTSA was still able to continue to support academic enrichment, health and safety, special education, parent education, and literacy promotion.
A word of thanks also to our school administrators, faculty and staff for their continued support and partnership with the PTSA.
We would also like to thank DeCicco's grocery story in Ardsley for the tremendous financial support through their receipt program. The monies earned there continue to benefit our schools through grants and programs.
Remember the PTSA is an all volunteer organization and always needs your help. Your commitment and dedication is what makes us successful within our schools.
Have a wonderful summer!

What has the PTSA been doing so far this fall?

PLENTY!
Memberships were sold at the Ferry Festa and at four back to school nights with over 500 members this year. Our award winning calendar is a free perk for all PTSA members. Additional calendars are still available for purchase at $ 10 each.

Despite rain, wind, and more rain, our new Pumpkin Fair chair, Shannon Johnson, ran a very fun and successful community event. Games and crafts were held in the gym and food and entertainment were available in the cafeteria. When the rain slowed down, there was a horse drawn carriage for hay rides. Attendance was high and community spirit was on display. Thanks to Shannon and her team for a fun filled day.

Photos and photo re-takes were taken at all three schools thanks to a group of PTSA volunteers. Chairs at Springhurst were Sheryl Cullen and Michele Digirolomo. Paula McCormick chaired the event at the Middle School. High School photos was chaired by Joe Rooney.  Speical thanks to them all and to their volunteers.

Another successful fall fundaiser is the Sally Foster gifts and wrapping paper. Winnie Madden and Susan Glickstern co chaired this program. There's still time to order on their website, see the link on the DF PTSA's home page.

Thanks to Robin Altman, the PTSA has been sending out an electronic newsletter every other week. The most recent issue is always available on this site.

We have a budget line of $ 10,000 for teacher grants. Our executive committee anxiously read all applications and we're happy to report that many have been approved. Pending approval of the donation by the Board of Education, we'll be sharing our grants with you very soon. We received grants from each school and one that will reach every student district wide. Stay tuned...

Will you be shopping for books this holiday season? Come to the Barnes & Noble on Central Avenue in Yonkers Friday-Saturday December 4-5. If you use a special voucher (available on this website) a percentage of your sale will go back to the PTSA. We even have entertainment scheduled at the store that weekend. Friday night there's a Polar Express storytime at 7 pm. Saturday come at 1:00 to watch the Stepping Eagles perform then stay for Bailey McGillian singing holiday music at 4:00.

Looking for a family outing for the holidays?
"That Time of Year"  a holiday concert written by Springhurst parent Laurence Holzman will be performed at York Theater company in Manhattan, Lexington Ave at 54th Street
PTSA will receive $5 of each ticket purchased. All Tickets are $ 37.50 each.
Call box office 212-935-5820 use code "PTSA"
Shows  Friday 12/18 8 pm
            Saturday 12/19  2:30 and 8 pm
            Sunday 12/20  2:30 and 7:30 pm

There's a new simple way to help support our schools. Stop & Shop has a program where you can register your shopping card on their website and select a school that will get points based on your purchases. These points are turned into cash and our schools will get a check directly from the store each month.  Register your card at:
http://www.stopandshop.com/aplus   and select Springhurst, DF MS or DF HS from the pull down menu. That's all you have to do. The program runs until March 2010.

We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The DF PTSA is grateful for our members who attend our programs, volunteer at the Pumpkin Fair, chair an event, support a fundraiser, and help us meet our goals to advocate for all our students. Thank YOU to all.

Please feel free to contact us.  You can reach us at presidents.dfptsa@gmail.com
